The two standards that wire the agent economy together now sit under one neutral body, whose membership crossed 250 in under a year. A shared standard under neutral governance is what enterprise buyers have been asking for. It means the agent architecture you build this year is less likely to be captive to whichever lab wins next year. But a governance home is not a security guarantee. The same month the protocols moved under one roof, researchers were still cataloguing tens of thousands of exposed agent connections. Interoperability arrived first. The controls are running behind it, and the gap between the two is where this week's real work sits. Here is why a CIO should care about a governance reshuffle. The protocols are the wiring, and until now the wiring belonged to vendors. If your agents spoke MCP, you were leaning on Anthropic's stewardship. If they spoke A2A, you were leaning on Google's. Neutral governance changes the risk math: the standard your architecture depends on is no longer a single company's roadmap decision. That makes a multi-vendor agent stack a defensible procurement position rather than a hopeful one. Do not overread it either.
